$87.20

Join experienced long-distance hiker Mark Flagler for a full day workshop in the Wicklow Mountains.. The workshop will introduce you to the world of long-distance walking, providing invaluable information to help prepare you for your next adventure. The 5-6+ hour session will allow for plenty of time to walk and discuss the many aspects of taking on a long-distance route including planning, preparation, training, weather, gear, clothing, food, staying tough mentally and much, much more.
Mark Flagler has trekked over 20,000km on 5 continents. He has vast experience on Camino routes in Europe, wilderness trails in North America, world famous treks in Patagonia and countless trails on the island of Ireland. Mark is also an accomplished mountaineer, former mountain rescuer and has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa and Mount Elbrus in Russia.

This workshop is perfect for anyone considering the challenge of walking a long-distance trail. Either a wilderness trail, pilgrimage route or a long trail in Ireland. Come out for a good walk and learn first-hand about these types of long-distance journeys, how to plan, prepare and gain valuable information about life on the trail.

The route and what to expect

The group will meet up at the Crone Woods Car Park (location on Google Maps) at 9am sharp. There will be a 10-15 minute introduction and a brief explanation of what the day entails then we are off into the backcountry.
The group will follow the Wicklow Way through the forest, passing ancient trees and old stone walls. At 2.2km we reach a viewing point to look across to Powerscourt Waterfall and the summit of Djouce. We eventually climb down to Dargle River, cross the footbridge and take a short break to admire the stunning Glensoulan Walley. From here we begin a steady uphill climb. We leave the Wicklow Way and follow the short, steep trail to the Djouce summit which stands 725 metres tall. We stop here for lunch and enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views of the impressive Wicklow Mountains.
Depending on time and how the group is feeling we can either retrace our steps heading back to the car park or continue southwest down the mountain looping around the mountain via the Wicklow Way and continue down to the car park. This route will add an additional 2km to the day so we can see how we get on and decide as a group how much walking everyone wants to do.
